When the “City of Trees” becomes the “City of Leaves”
The City of Modesto’s Community Forestry Division reminds citizens of the upcoming leaf collection season with helpful tips for disposing of fallen leaves.
During the “non-leaf season”, from January through October, leaves
should be placed in the green yard waste recycling containers that are
placed out for weekly collection by garbage companies. In mid-November,
the City’s Leaf Removal Program begins and continues through December.
During that time, residents are asked to handle disposal of leaves
differently.
First, residents should place leaves first in their green yard waste recycling container until it is full. Once it is full, leaves should be placed in piles on the street. Leaf piles must be at least one foot from the curb and should be piled away from street drains in order to reduce the possibility of street flooding. Do not put leaves in bags or in any container other than the green yard waste recycling container.
Crews from the City’s Community Forestry Division will collect piles of leaves from the street only and will not collect leaves that are placed in alleys. Collected leaves are taken to an undeveloped park site and recycled to improve soil conditions.
After leaf removal crews have serviced your street, please do not sweep the remaining leaves into piles. Street sweeping crews will follow up to collect the remaining leaves using street sweepers. Piling the remaining leaves can plug the sweeper mechanisms.
